Mõrena!!!!
I wanted to say a quick hello and apologise for not sending a newsletter last week. I’m in super learning and rehearsing mode for a busy month of shows.
This is a good thing, but it means my early morning writing brain is being hijacked by my early morning learning brain.
Everyone’s process is different, but I find it best to get into the song-learning early before the day’s business and thoughts crowd in.
Being busy is good, and because I never know when the work will stop, I have been saying YES to everything, but sometimes that means a little stress and a few roosting chickens! (not a lot of roasting chickens has been done)
I hope my brain plays the game. I thwacked it recently on a badly placed wall speaker at the very fun Haiku Redo show, and I’ve experienced an unwelcome return of a few TBI symptoms. The Thom Yorke show at Spark was incredible, but I was shattered the next day after the sensory overload. Hopefully, it is just a little setback, and all will be well for the next month of gigging.
First up - I am doing solo support for Jon Toogood’s album tour in Hamilton, Auckland and Great Barrier - I have never been to Great Barrier - it will be a fast visit, but I’m looking forward to that and the other shows (of course). I’ll play a short set - a few songs from my solo album and a couple from The Bads back catalogue. I haven’t played solo very often, so I’m looking forward to that (I think!!), and if I like it and it isn’t a disaster, I will do more next year. It has been nice having a reason to rehearse my own songs. I’ve enjoyed getting to know Jon over the last few years of Come Together shows, and I’m also looking forward to catching him perform his new album solo.

And as to the song learning, I am performing in the Atomic 2.0 tour- a bunch of brilliant songs honouring women songwriters and performers - with, as the ad says, “an all femme line-up” The last tour was a hoot and a memorable thing - the audience was so up for it,
I have posted this one before in notes, but I love this picture of the end of the Auckland show. It did feel triumphant. (tour dates below)

Then, on December 7th, When The Cat’s Away headlines Napier’s 150th anniversary Christmas Concert—it is a free show, so if you are in the HB, come and say hello!
I hope there are more shows next year, but I’m not the only one in this country feeling that income/job uncertainty.
Lots of love to you. I’ll write again soon.
Get yer tickets!!
Please take care of yourself, and keep an eye out for all things badly placed - wall speakers included !
